How to actually take a break over Christmas

If you’re self-employed or a side hustler it can be difficult to actually take a break over Christmas. The thought of abandoning everything for a week can be quite scary and you might start to have nightmares about everything imploding whilst you’re “away”. The chances of this happening are very slim by the way.

Regardless of how daunting it may seem, it is important to rest and enjoy the festive season with your family and friends.

Take a break at Christmas

Here are our top tips to do just that!

Scheduling

You probably knew this one was coming. Scheduling your blog posts and social media outputs can be a great way to take a step back for a week. There are plenty of fab tools to help you schedule your social media posts such as Buffer and Hootsuite. Spend a day getting everything in place and then you can simply sit back and relax while it does its thing.

Let clients know you will be unavailable

Most of your clients will probably be enjoying a little rest themselves but it’s always good to let them know you won’t be available. Simply send an email out before Christmas letting them know when your last day will be and when you’ll be returning.

Change your social bio to say you’ll be away

You can also let your followers know you’ll be away by temporarily changing your bio to let them know when you will be unavailable from.

Only check emails once a day

Emails can easily take up half a day if we let, so only check them once. This doesn’t mean going through each one and responding; this is just to check there is nothing urgent that needs your attention.

Let your phone go to answer machine

Don’t answer your work phone. If someone is desperate to get hold of you they will leave a message and you can get back to them later.

Only respond if urgent

This should go without saying. Don’t respond to everything, only the things that literally cannot wait.

Plan fun activities to resist the urge to work

If you’re one of those people who can’t resist the allure of work, plan things to take your mind off it. Go for lunch with friends, enjoy a family walk somewhere scenic or watch a film on the sofa without your phone or laptop being within easy reach.

Or if you can’t resist, set yourself a time limit

If you can’t stop yourself, set a time limit with an alarm and actually stop when it goes off!

We hope these tips will help you take a break over Christmas this year and that hope you have a lovely and restful Christmas and New Year. We can’t wait to speak to you all again in 2018.
