Most people have dreamt of being self-employed at one point or another, but how many of us actually know the truth about becoming an entrepreneur?

Here’s a list of the pros and cons we think come with the territory…

Pros of being an entrepreneur

You make all the decisions

If you don’t like something you can change it, or you want something to be the top priority then you can make it so. You have complete control over everything in your own little world and that’s pretty thrilling!

Freedom!!!

I know you just shouted that in your head like Mel Gibson from Braveheart, but it’s true.

You can pick your own hours, chose what you work on and even decide if you want to give yourself a raise. Which, let’s be honest who hasn’t wanted to do?.

A sense of….yay I did that!

When something goes right or you complete a project you can look forward to the wonderful feeling of achievement and success. You don’t have to share praise with people who possibly didn’t really do anything, it was all on you and you came through.

It’s all about the passion baby

You can follow your passion whatever that may be and turn it into a profitable business, can anyone really ask for more from life?!

Cons of being an entrepreneur

Self-disciplined

You gotta be tough on yourself, you can’t procrastinate when there is something that needs doing. If you do it’s your pay day gone if you do. You have to make sure that everything that needs to be done gets done.

Stress is your new BFF

Say hello, because you’ll spending morning, noon and night together. Being an entrepreneur isn’t all rainbows and unicorns, sometimes it’s about deadlines, budgets and a general feeling of being overwhelmed. Just remember to take some time to relax and think about the positives.

Lonely, I’m so lonely…

Now that Akon is stuck in your head (you’re welcome). Let’s discuss how lonely it can be working by yourself. Some days this can really get to you but, try to schedule social calls or out of the house visits with your friends to remind you that you’re not alone.

Risky business

Becoming self-employed is a huge risk to most people. It’s a new set of rules to follow, you have to give up a stable position with regular paychecks and there’s always that chance that it won’t work out.

Unstable income

You might not know when your next payday is going to come in and some months you’ll get more than others. Try to have a little bit of money put aside in case times get hard for a while.
